North Connaught Youth & Community Service is a regional youth service provider covering Sligo, Leitrim and Mayo. We were founded in the 1960’s as the Sligo Federation of Youth Clubs but we are now a company limited by guarantee and are a registered charity, owned by the youth groups and projects affiliated to it. NCYCS is affiliated to Youth Work Ireland. We support the development of young people to enable them to take greater control of their own lives by making decisions and by exercising responsibility and contributing to the development of both their community and their society.
Our youth projects are community based and aimed at 7 - 18 year olds around social inclusion and rural disadvantage. We aim at promoting awareness of the needs of young people of North Mayo and develop a more structured and cohesive youth service to meet these needs. This objective enables these young people to take greater control of their lives and enables them to play a more active part in their community. The project has been responsible for initiating, developing and co-ordinating services and programmes for young people in North Mayo in response to their social, educational and developmental needs.
We work across the county in partnership with young people, volunteers and other organisations and are committed to pioneering and sustaining quality youth work which enables young people to maximise their potential through their voluntary participation, and offers them opportunities for learning, achievement and support.
We operate 15 youth clubs/café and projects in County Leitrim, catering for over 600 young people. The menu of activities is ever growing and youth clubs have come a long way in recent years, reflecting a vibrant mix of local youth volunteers, youth committees and professional support from Leitrim Youth Project. At the local youth club/cafe, members, volunteer leaders and Leitrim Youth Project staff plan a programme of activities that is driven by the members' interest and needs. The menu might include many different activities under the headings of sports, culture, recreation, arts, personal development, education and trips and exchanges through local, regional and national levels. Most of all, however, the local youth club/cafe is a place to be ‘yourself’ to meet with friends, hang out and grow as a person in a safe, local environment. In rural communities in Leitrim, the club/youth café provides an opportunity for young people to have a real and meaningful role in shaping their lives. Values such as respect, co-operation, responsibility and participation are promoted.
To affirm the importance of young people and support them and those who work with them through the provision of services in their communities.
